CHICAGO PROBATE

Autopsy

Under the Autopsy Act a physician may perform an autopsy upon the body of decedent if the decedent or his or her agent under a power of attorney for health care has authorized it. The autopsy may also be authorized by a spouse, an adult child, a parent or an adult brother or sister who has the right to dispose of the body or someone who is next of kin with that right. The authorization must be in writing and signed or, if it is telephonic or telegraphic, it must be verified in writing by at least two persons who were present when and where it is received.
